Billing and Credentialing Specialist (Part-time - 30 hours per week, benefit eligible)

Once training is complete, after training a candidate can work a hybrid schedule working remote and on campus.



$18.00 (minimum) - $20.50 (midpoint) per hour

The posted salary range represents the minimum to the midpoint within RVU’s compensation plan.   RVU’s full compensation structure provides a minimum to a maximum range.  The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skill, knowledge, experience, education, and credentials.

Primary Purpose

This position is responsible for reviewing skilled nursing facility claims prior to submission to insurance companies, working with patients on account balances, follow up with insurance companies on unpaid claims.  Assist Director with credentialing of physicians with various insurance companies to include governmental payers.  Work with the nursing facility to gather patient information and input into EMR.  This part-time position is for approximately 30 hours per week and is eligible for benefits. A portion of hours can be completed remotely if desired.  The hiring range on this position is $18.00 - $20.50 per hour commensurate with experience. 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Ensure all claims are submitted with a goal of minimal errors.
  2. Verifies completeness and accuracy of all claims prior to submission.
  3. Timely follow up on insurance claim denials, exceptions or exclusions.
  4. Reading and interpreting insurance explanation of benefits.
  5. Respond to inquiries from insurance companies, patients and providers timely.
  6. Make necessary arrangements for medical records request, completion of additional information as requested by insurance companies.
  7. Review patient claims and accounts and submit any necessary adjustment forms.
  8. Review self-pay claims and adjust off any necessary balance after the 10% discount is given as soon as charges are posted and payment is applied.
  9. Review claims aging monthly.
  10. Produce monthly aging and revenue reports for the SUVH claims.
  11. Review and work task box daily.
  12. Review day end tasks to ensure all claims are billed out by month end.
  13. Communicate any claims/billing issues or trends to management immediately.
  14. Ability to multi-task.

Marginal Job Functions

  1. Complete credentialing packets for various payers.
  2. Initiate commercial contracting agreements.
  3. Review insurance contracting agreements as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Complete knowledge of medical terminology and outpatient insurance billing terms.
  2. Experience in CPT and ICD-10 coding.
  3. STRONG knowledge of billing and coding.
  4. Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  5. Outstanding organizational, verbal, listening, and written communications skills.
  6. Analytical and problem solving skills.
  7. Ability to enter in data accurately with attention to detail.
  8. Strong computer skills and ability to learn a state of the art electronic medical records program.
  9. Ability to work with confidential medical records and maintain HIPAA policies and procedures.
  10. Ability to multi-task and problem solve innovatively.
  11. Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
  12. Demonstrated effective time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  13. Willingness and ability to learn new skills as needed in the medical office environment.
  14. Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary.
  15. Complete annual continuing medical education courses to ensure compliance and update to date knowledge on billing and coding.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School diploma
  2. Administrative assistant or equivalent coursework or at least 2 years of relevant experience
  3. Two years’ experience in billing and coding in a medical office setting or a Billing and Coding Certificate

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Previous experience with primary care medical office (family medicine, pediatrics or internal medicine)
  2. Previous experience with electronic medical records.
  3. Experience with Athena or similar EMR
  4. Experience with Medicare, Medicaid and private payer credentialing. 
  5. Two years’ experience in front medical office work
