Primary Purpose

The Discipline Director of OMM is the principal curriculum leader of osteopathic principles, practice, and manipulation for the Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine. This leader is responsible for developing the osteopathic content of MCOM’s curriculum for all four years. The Discipline Director is also responsible for the supervision and management of OMM course directors and will work collaboratively with all RVU faculty to incorporate the delivery of osteopathic content in the MCOM curriculum.      

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide oversight, direction and guidance for the faculty members involved in OMM courses.  
  2. Assist the Chair of Clinical Sciences in providing leadership to OMM faculty with feedback, assessments, performance evaluations, and performance improvement actions.
  3. Assist the Chair of Clinical Sciences in preparing financial and budgetary plans and help oversee expenditures related to OMM.
  4. Assist the Chair of Clinical Sciences in recruiting and hiring full-time, part-time, or adjunct faculty members to effectively administer all OMM courses and events.
  5. Work collaboratively with other administrators and faculty to incorporate osteopathic philosophy and practice in other MCOM courses. 
  6. Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and modification as part of RVU’s continuous quality improvement and assessment processes, particularly focusing on osteopathic content.
  7. Provide professional and clinical services as needed and as assigned by the Chair of Clinical Sciences.
  8. Represent RVU with positivity and integrity in collaborative initiatives with internal and external stakeholders to help accomplish the mission of the University.
  9. Serve as an active participant on various committees or task forces or other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Marginal Job Functions

  1. Assist administration, faculty and staff in special projects as required.
  2. Act as liaison between MCOM, the professional community, other educational institutions and organizations as indicated or directed by the Chair of Clinical Sciences or Dean of MCOM.
  3. Participate in relevant and appropriate community and professional outreach activities on behalf of the college and the university.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in osteopathic manipulative medicine.  
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the delivery of medical education.
  3. Demonstrate excellent communication skills.
  4. Demonstrate ability to motivate and mentor students and peers.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers, electronics, and software (Microsoft Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, PDF, Zoom, etc.) commensurate with the modern work environment.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency and professionalism in video conferencing, speaking, and teaching in the digital age.
  7. Demonstrate experience in virtual teaching (e.g. pre-recorded lectures, Zoom lectures, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Terminal medical degree: D.O.
  2. Active board certification from the AOBNMM or a Certificate of Special Proficiency in OMM (C-SPOMM)
  3. Active medical license
  4. Academic teaching experience at an osteopathic medical school or graduate medical education program.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience as a faculty member and a course director.
  2. Experience in lab or small group facilitation and instruction.  
  3. Academic medicine leadership experience.
