A special opportunity as the first Chair, Department of Clinical Sciences to help lead and establish the Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine, a branch campus of Rocky Vista University located in Billings, MT

Primary Purpose

The Chair of Clinical Sciences is the principal administrator and leader of the Department of Clinical Sciences. The Chair is responsible for the management of the budget and all resources allocated to the Department. The Chair is also responsible for the supervision and professional development of the employees within his/her reporting structure.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide oversight, direction and guidance for the Clinical Sciences faculty to ensure all academic responsibilities are achieved with the highest level of professionalism to accomplish the RVU and MCOM mission statements.
  2. Provide leadership to team with regular feedback, assessments, performance evaluations, and performance improvement actions. The Chair is responsible for recruiting, developing, advancing and retaining department faculty and staff aligned with the RVU core values.
  3. Develop annual department budget and effectively manage all allocated resources of the department in adherence to RVU policies and procedures.
  4. Help build a culture that respects, values, and promotes diversity by recruiting, hiring, and retaining diverse talent within an atmosphere of access, equity, and inclusion.
  5. Work in partnership with the Chair of Biomedical Sciences, Directors of Pre-Clinical Education, Director of Tracks and Electives to ensure a cohesive curriculum plan and execution.
  6. Work collaboratively with the Director of Simulation and the Assistant/Associate Dean of Clinical Education and GME to provide clinical faculty support for educational events, courses, or other clinical training activities offered by RVU.  
  7. Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and modification as part of RVU’s continuous quality improvement and assessment processes.
  8. Represent RVU with positivity and integrity in collaborative initiatives with internal and external stakeholders to help accomplish the mission of the University.
  9. Serve as an active participant on various committees or task forces or other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Marginal Job Functions

  1. Assist administration, faculty and staff in special projects as required.
  2. Act as liaison between MCOM, the professional community, other educational institutions and organizations as indicated or directed by the Assistant or Associate Dean or Dean of MCOM.
  3. Participate in relevant and appropriate community and professional outreach activities on behalf of the college and the university.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and experience specifically in regards to undergraduate medical education.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the AOA core competencies, entrustable professional activities, and other medical educational milestones.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of relevant accreditation standards and processes.
  4. Demonstrate excellent communication skills and established experience in public speaking and writing.
  5. Demonstrate experience and proficiency in at least one higher education learning management system (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.)
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers, electronics, and software (Microsoft Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, PDF, Zoom, etc.) commensurate with the modern work environment.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency and professionalism in video conferencing, speaking, and teaching in the digital age.
  8. Demonstrate experience in virtual teaching (e.g. pre-recorded lectures, Zoom lectures, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Terminal medical degree: D.O.
  2. Board certification in a primary care specialty by the AOA or ABMS.
  3. Current medical license.
  4. Academic leadership and teaching experience at an accredited medical school.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience as a Chair, Vice-chair, or Director at an academic institution, ideally at a College of Osteopathic Medicine.
  2. Experience as a faculty member and a course director.
  3. Experience with college or program accreditations.
  4. Experience in personnel and budget management.
  5. Experience in standardized testing and assessment.
  6. Involvement with state or national organizations.
