A special opportunity as the first Assistant or Associate Dean of Student Affairs to help lead and establish the Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine, a branch campus of Rocky Vista University located in Billings, MT

Primary Purpose

The Assistant/Associate Dean of Student Affairs is the principal administrator and leader responsible for the full range of development, implementation, coordination, assessment, and management of all relevant services, activities, and support of the students at RVU-MCOM. The position is also responsible for the supervision and professional development of the employees within his/her reporting structure.  

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide oversight, direction and guidance for the staff of Student Affairs in planning, developing and implementing support services, student activities, and counseling to benefit all students.
  2. Provide leadership to team with regular feedback, assessments and performance evaluations. Assist in recruiting, developing, advancing and retaining team members.
  3. Provide leadership to team to ensure student success through career and academic advising, access to mental and physical health resources, and education and enforcement of professional behavior in a sensitive and confidential manner.
  4. Help build a culture that respects, values, and promotes diversity by recruiting, hiring, and retaining diverse talent within an atmosphere of access, equity, and inclusion.
  5. Develop and execute strategies to ensure that budgets, policies, and procedures are followed.
  6. Work collaboratively  with leaders to help manage and support internal departments (Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid, etc.), institutions, and other stakeholders to ensure the mission of RVU and MCOM are met in accordance with our core values. 
  7. Ensure relevant academic standards are met as per accreditation requirements of the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation and the Higher Learning Commission.
  8. Serve as an active participant on committees or task forces or other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Marginal Job Functions

  1. Assist administration, faculty and staff in special projects as required.
  2. Act as liaison between RUV, the professional community, other educational institutions and organizations as indicated and directed by the Dean.
  3. Participate in relevant and appropriate community and professional outreach activities on behalf of the college and the university.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of student services and activities in higher education.
  2. Demonstrate excellent communication skills and established experience in public speaking and writing.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers, electronics, and software (Microsoft products, PDF, etc.) commensurate with the modern work environment.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of relevant laws and regulations regarding students (e.g. FERPA).

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Terminal degree: D.O., M.D., Ph. D., Ed.D, or other equivalent doctorate degree.
  2. Multi-year of experience in higher education administrative student services.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Previous experience at a health sciences college or university.
  2. Experience in personnel and budget management.
  3. Experience with college accreditations.
