Primary Purpose

The Assistant/Associate Dean of Pre-Clinical Education is the principal administrator and leader of the MCOM academic program for the pre-clinical years. This position is responsible for the full range of design, development, implementation, coordination, assessment, and management of the pre-clinical curriculum. This position is also responsible for the supervision and professional development of the employees within his/her reporting structure.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide oversight, direction and guidance for the pre-clinical department chairs, faculty, staff and students in planning, developing and implementing the MCOM pre-clinical curriculum.
  2. Provide leadership to team with regular feedback, assessments and performance evaluations. Assist in recruiting, developing, advancing and retaining faculty and staff.
  3. Help build a culture that respects, values, and promotes diversity by recruiting, hiring, and retaining diverse talent within an atmosphere of access, equity, and inclusion.
  4. Develop and execute strategies to ensure that budgets, policies, and procedures are followed.
  5. Work collaboratively with leaders of other internal departments, institutions, and other stakeholders to ensure the mission of RVU and MCOM are met in accordance with our core values. 
  6. Ensure relevant academic standards are met as per accreditation requirements of the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation and the Higher Learning Commission.
  7. Serve as an active participant on various committees or task forces or other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Marginal Job Functions

  1. Assist administration, faculty and staff in special projects as required.
  2. Act as liaison between the College, the professional community, other educational institutions and organizations, state and federal agencies as indicated and directed by the Dean.
  3. Participate in relevant and appropriate community and professional outreach activities on behalf of the college and the university.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and experience specifically in regards to undergraduate medical education.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of core competencies, Entrustable Professional Activities, and other medical educational milestones.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of research methodologies especially as related to medical education assessment and evaluation.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of college accreditation standards and processes.
  5. Demonstrate excellent communication skills and established experience in public speaking and writing.
  6. Demonstrate experience and proficiency in at least one higher education learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.)
  7. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers, electronics, and software (Microsoft Office products, etc.) commensurate with the modern work environment.
  8. Demonstrate proficiency and professionalism in video conferencing, speaking, and teaching.
  9. Demonstrate experience in virtual teaching (e.g. pre-recorded lectures, Zoom lectures, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Terminal degree: D.O., M.D., Ph.D., EdD, PharmD, or other equivalent doctorate degree.
  2. Academic leadership and teaching experience at a medical school.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience as a Chair or Vice-chair or other leadership positions with personnel and budget management responsibilities at an academic institution, ideally at a College of Osteopathic Medicine.
  2. Experience as a faculty member and a course director.
  3. Experience with college accreditations.
  4. Experience in standardized testing and assessment.
  5. Clinical experience in patient care settings
